In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, team Design21 has collected some thoughts and ideas of adaptive reuse of conventional private/ public buses into Emergency Care Mobile Centers.
In case, the hospital traffic spirals out of control (A possible challenge our healthcare infrastructure might face in the future), or remote villages need immediate ICU facility, these A/C buses are equipped with necessary lifesaving equipment, and can be effective solutions in providing improved medical services to urban/ rural habitations and strengthen certain remotely located medical facilities.
A regular 12m x 6 cylinder bus, stripped of its fixed furniture, in a short span of 3-4 days can be transformed into either:
1) Mobile ICU unit
2) Medical Ambulance for transporting multiple patients on bed / chair – both single or double decker format.
3) Storage / accommodation facility for travelling medical staff.
The first prototype is already in the works and others under trials. These designs can be adopted by most bus companies locally as well as globally with minimum modifications.
A special thanks to Dr. Sudhir Dubey (Medanta) for his generous support and guidance on medical expertise to envision these concepts.
A detailed manual is being created to help agencies build these on their own.
